Don't Be Mean to 13 Book Review

Do you have a fear of the number 13? Ever wondered why there is a stigma surrounding the number 13? The new picture book Don't Be Mean to 13 by Douglas Harris gives kids some insight on the superstition that "13" is somehow unlucky. And don't even get us started on Friday the 13th!

But there's no good reason to fear this number, just as there's no good reason to think that any superstition is real and will come true.

The book also has a good message of embracing what makes you unique. Just like how there is no other number like 13, there's nobody else like you. So instead of being mean to 13 (or something or someone else), learn more about them, and you'll see that there's nothing to be afraid of.

I read the book with my 7-year-old, and we had fun trying to pronounce the word "triskaidekaphobia". The book actually encouraged some conversation between us as we tried to remember if we'd been in a hotel that did have a floor 13 labeled in the elevator. I know I definitely learned a lot about where the fear of the number 13 comes from.

Don't Be Mean to 13 is published by Label Free Publishing and is available to purchase now. I received a review copy from the publishser.
