What's In a Name? Scrapbook Page

Happy Middle Name Pride Day! I'm sure we all have a story about our middle names: how we got them, nicknames based on them, etc. I once read an article about the origin of middle names. People back in the old days wanted to name their kids after admirable people, like George Washington. So instead of just naming their kid George Smith, they named their kid George Washington Smith. Now their kid had a middle name.

Whether or not that's actually true, to the best of my knowledge, everybody has a middle name. If you don't, then I'd love to hear how that happened (or didn't happen, I guess).

My middle name is Elizabeth, and when I was thinking of Middle Name Pride Day, I thought about doing a blog post about all the nicknames my parents called me that incorporated my first and middle names. But, then I also got to thinking about my daughter's middle name and how it actually wasn't my first choice.

I had a random photo of her wearing her 76ers jersey and holding a 76ers Funko figure. There wasn't an event behind the photo, and it didn't have to go in my scrapbook album in chronological order. So I decided to do something that I rarely do: tell a story.

In honor of Middle Name Pride Day, I scrapbooked the story of how we chose my daughter's middle name.

For the record, I wanted her middle name to be "Rue" after actress Rue McClanahan who played Blanche on The Golden Girls. I was overruled.

So I'm not sure that I have much pride in my daughter's middle name, but at least she'll be able to look back through my albums and read about our middle name process for her.

Right now, I don't think she cares either way about what her middle name is, but who knows? Maybe down the line she really will come to like what we chose for her.
