When Chloe Brown (the title character in Get a Life, Chloe Brown) is almost hit by a car, she realizes that things need to change in her life. So she makes a list, a list of things she needs to do in order to "get a life". How hard can it be? Well, for someone with a chronic illness, very hard. But enter Redford Morgan, the superintendent of Chloe's apartment building. These two have a love/hate relationship. Well, more hate in the beginning. Red thinks Chloe is hot but stuck-up. Chloe thinks Red is hot and... well, I'm not really sure what else. She is kind of rude to him, but I suppose basically avoiding people for a year will make it difficult for one to know how to speak to others in a normal way.
Anyway, somehow the two of them get past their misconceptions and realize they actually like each other. Red then helps Chloe fulfill some of the things on her list, such as camping and having a night out, plus a few extras.
If you're thinking that this sounds like a typical chic-lit novel, then yes, you'd be right. But it's actually a combination of chic-lit and romance novel. A little heavy on the romance novel part. I had no idea that Talia Hibbert was already a successful romance novelist. If I had, then maybe I wouldn't have been so surprised by all the steamy scenes in this novel. If those things are your taste, then you'll like this novel and its sequels. (Another one is coming out next year.) Maybe it could be your Christmas vacation read. Just turn the book so the guy sitting next to you on the plane can't see what you're reading...
I liked the book just fine, but I totally saw the twist coming (it just took a long time to get there), and I also wasn't totally believing the relationship between the main characters. I think I needed more build-up. And during the steamy scenes, I was actually kind of turned off by Red's actions.
I don't know. I don't normally read romance novels, so maybe I'm just expecting something different. If you're a romance novel fanatic, read this book and let me know if I'm wrong.
Get a Life, Chloe Brown is published by Avon and is available on bookstore shelves today. I received a free ARC at BookCon.
